From a survey done in 2013 using a variety of different organisations there are some interesting and some quite frankly scary finds!
- 66% still back-up to tape!
- 56% back-up 100% of their servers at least weekly!
- 39% do not encrypt back-up media! (That's done 17% which is a good sign! Although still very scary as our personal data is not encrypt so anyone who can access it, can see it!)
- 27% are 'extremely' confident of getting up and running again after a disaster!
Although there are very few new technologies specifically for the backing up of data, the growing use and development of Solid State Drives could see them used more and more for back-up, as of yet they do not have a large enough storage capacity for whole back-ups but they have extremely fast read/write speeds so it would drastically speed up the time of back-ups, also they are still quite expensive for large sizes, but as these are still being researched and developed, who knows where they could go in the future?
